OUR LITTLE STORY
A word from Tim Perkins, creator of The Educators.
I thought I would add a personal note as someone that has been creating comic books of all genres for more than forty years, for publishers all around the world as diverse as Marvel, DC, Disney and more – having seen their successes with children of all ages when used in the classroom.
I am biased, of course I am, but I have seen comics successfully introduce the many schools, teachers and students of all ages to the wonders inside their pages whilst bringing understanding in their uses with curriculum-based subject matter.
It is a very privileged position that I find myself in when I am invited along to schools to deliver workshops and talks and see classes, especially those containing classes or individual pupils that perhaps have learning difficulties or are reluctant learners and witness their joy at using them to learn.
It was with this in mind that I decided to include cited essays and papers regarding comics and their uses in the classroom written by educators and academics for further reading for teachers to back up my words on the subject.
All I and a lot of my fellow comic creators around the world have asked is for comics to have been given a chance to be used as a teaching aid, not a replacement for good teaching practise. Thankfully nowadays many educators and academics are seeing that potential for their uses in the classroom environment.
I hope you and your children get the same joy and excitement at learning through comics as the many that have gone before having done so. Imagine introducing your classes to the wonders inside their pages that will go onto to lead them to read the pages of books as diverse as Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stephenson, and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame – alongside The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien and The Meaning of Relativity by Albert Einstein, as their education progresses.
